Meteora #1 Bubble Comics ( Russia)
Meteora #1
I read Meteora #1 from Bubble comics. I have to say it is a nice change of pace and seems to be very original in its art style alone. Why? It is essentially more extravagant than an American comic. The artists behind the work has finer lines and more detail than found in American works and maybe even Manga works. Maybe they worked on complex detailed type work before this publication but I really like the art style.
Meteora is simply about a woman who is nicknamed Meteora for how the brash and wild nature of how she completes her smuggling jobs. The story starts with her driving towards a black hole and her regretting taking a job. The story goes into the past when she and her accomplice-a lion humanoid are looking for a contact. Of course she explains the job to him on the way there. Two opposite gender prey mantis are having sex implied against a wall. Going to the supposed meeting spot; where there are a bunch of bug like ,crab like and sea animal like creatures who supposedly hate humans. In this story I guess humans aren't well respected and they basically mutter species slurs at Meteora. The crab alien says, " your kind eats mine". I find this a unique take to some degree.
One then says that she is primitive and spits on her and then Meteora says, " No one! Ever! Gets to call me a Barbarian!" A fight breaks out and she cracks an object over one alien's head after kicking the one that said the word. In that kick the comic pans over to the prey mantises and the female has bitten off the males head and casually look in as if to see, " what is wrong?" This seems to be some type of inside joke or revelation about how this place lawlessness is normal or that it is the nature of the place to be lawless. I really like how the words and art are in that one panel when the female prey mantis alien looks in. Basically their contact was outside chilling because he could not stand going inside the place. He gives them a job that is basically to deliver money to convince/bribe a planet that basically is the only planet preventing him from trading in a region in space. Or rather individuals on a senate that will vote if the planet will allow his company to trade in the region. The guy says the container must not be opened at any time because the species on that planet would suspect something is off if it is opened. Meteora takes the job and we meet the last member of her crew which is some type of blue rodent type alien that has a gambling addiction.
Meteora after telling him to cart the course to the planet falls alseep and let's say the feminists would not appreciate how she is "sexualized" or shown sleeping without much clothes on but her underwear and letting down her hair that was in a pony tail of sorts that is very stylized in this work. It does make sense however that she would not sleep in the same clothes as she literally walks in for the other 24/7 of the time. She is awaken and the blue rodent alien has basically opened the container. It actually appears to be a "baby black hole". The black hole is attacked to the blue alien's hand and Meteora realizes they were hired to destroy a planet and must now get ride of the baby black hole before they die. Somehow this involves going into a black hole. We will see how this all works out.
I like the work as it is a fun take and the art is very original and with is own style of things. It is just very unique and carries it own life and is not trying to imitate anyone else.
