Gotham High. Review.

Alongside New Warriors (2020) as the work the youtuber commentary crew and their followers won't give a chance and story they have only read by its cover, Gotham High is the newest graphic novel from DC comics that represents Bruce Wayne, Selina Kyle and the Joker as teens at a high school. Sure is it a cool story? Many people just alone from seeing the title design and the whole concept off an image, seem to think its terrible just because they don't like the designs and basically " are not going to spend money", to ever figure out. Basically people have given up on the work for what the see of the cover and basically don't ever want to read the story but that(their opinion based on a cover) is surely enough to merit that the story is "the worst idea ever". Or that, " this is the lowest point in comics ever". In my frank opinion, the lowest point in comics has already passed when Barbara Gordon was beaten with a pipe but yea, don't tell anyone that. Enough to say many people want to act as if judge and jury as if they have some prestige no one has in sane anything to say by a cover that the story is bad. I bet they were the kids who bought books at the bookfair based on cover alone and never read it too! But no one remembers books or book fairs. But I have read the story of Gotham High.
Bruce, Jack and Selina in order. ( I basically do not want to use
the same images people use to bastardize the work and don't want
to draw attention from various parties by putting a possible copyrighted image
in this post-this scene actually happens in the graphic novel. Essentially drew what happens in a scene of the comic to not attract any negative legal action(some entities are iffy).)

Hmm, what am I to say in reading this title and how did I read it? That is much a mystery. You cannot leave your house to go to the bookstore or the comicstore and in fact in my region and many places those places are closed for a reason because that corona virus is out there. And whilst some idiots want to try to continue life, they basically are just idiots who step out of the forcefield to basically get incernerated. I never seen so much stupidity in my life in broad display and it is a time where fools come out to play. Alas, somehow I did get the book or read it in some magical digital format. So there is that. I say the story is unique and much so.

I am to say it takes place in another dimension. Of course, I will say that character's races are changed and so are their genders at an odd placing. I mean literally its kind of asymetric to make Bruce Wayne and Alfred- Asian and yet Commisoner Gordon is a black woman? I mean in the original story they were all white people so why? Okay, going through asymetry works of notion. Commissioner Gordon is who I think to be called Barbara Gordon but serves as the principal of Gotham High. Um, yea and her daughter is called Barbie Gordon. The story is freaking weird in this time of equation. Dick Grayson is around the same age as Bruce Wayne and goes to a school he goes to. He is also black when in the original stories is white and yet Bruce Wayne is Asian. So much I am to say its like a pick or choose here.  If you were like a first part of the original Batman arc where it was just Bruce Wayne and Alfred-you get to be Asian. Then if you came later as a supporting role such as Comm. Gordon or Dick Grayson as Robin then you are black. That is just my thought on it. Anyways, to prove it Catwoman is basically to follow the similar trope thing. But yet again, I am not really sure of her race in the story. Not that race matters. Its just that the whole dimensional concept is odd here and so is the gender changing. For some reason Comm. Gordon is a woman in this world while everyone else holds their genders as to the original. Aside from that the story falls a bit well paced in some logicial reasoning that makes the stage for drama. I don't mean this in a satrical means either.

So the story basically starts off with Bruce Wayne typically being in the same circumstance of lossing his parents. The real start to the story however in what it actually starts with is Bruce Wayne beating up bullies who target Dick Grayson in this world. He, Bruce, gets expelled because the school is corrupt and basically he does not regret doing this act at all. I find that pretty much in character in what you would expect from a younger viligante or character who is to become Batman. Anyways so he is kicked out of that school and goes to Gotham High and it is to be a trashy school. Basically he has to take a filler class because," its the only one that fits on his schedule". Anyways, the story pans over to this guy called Jack Napier. Now, noticably in real cannon or the main Batman and common universe he shares with other heroes such as Superman and Wonderwoman-the Joker does not have a real name. This is kinda of to give this character their own sense of life beyond the original Joker mythos and it works. Why? Because, unlike Bruce Wayne-he does not come from money and lives on the poor side of things and frankly the story goes on into how he comes from an abusive/drug using household. Anyways, noticably has the same hairstyle as the current style the Joker in main continuity does. However here, the story is as such is that he is just a people's person and does shady things but more into that later. We get into Selina Kyle, Catwoman and she basically has had a long friendship with Jack Napier and smoothes over a gift he has brought here if you are to the read the story up to the point in which I say, "more into that later". When you see this interaction, there is more later and some people might not like it. But Catwoman in the main continuity is cold and self deserving and much left Batman at the altar. I mean, youtubers complained about that too and its was annoying as well. But yea,the thing to say in this story is that the characters don't deviate from their expectations in what you might see in the main continuity. We got detective hero type individual, troublemaker and thief individual and then we have Selina Kyle who is just some what as much as "Catwomen" here or there. I state plurals because DC has alot of multiversal versions of that character who in pretty much all kind of act in a similar way. Yet the steampunk Selina Kyle, I think was a nice character. In this story, maybe as much Catwomen is not a nice character.

So the story is basically as follows. So basically Bruce meets up with Selina Kyle again. Selina Kyle is basically plagued with misery all her own. Her father is with alzhemiers and basically needs to be moved to a facility and the nurse is only paid till the end of the year, so money is running out. I mean how does Bruce meet up with Selina? After the circumstance of her father being ill, she waves to Bruce from her window. And that is truly how the story beings. They basically meet up in school. Bruce Wayne gets along with everyone and buys people lunch from resturants. The group is basically Jack Napier, Bruce Wayne, Barbie Gordon and Selina Kyle. Jack Napier comes to call Bruce, I think-, " B-dub". I think it gives a notion to the character in which he can become ultimately which is the Joker. I mean Joker always calls the Batman did nicknames, of course so this fits right in line. So basically Bruce goes to a picture development club with Selina and Jack Napier is there because he has an interest in her. Selina invites Bruce to come to a party with her. So he does. They basically play poker with "rich students" true and true at the party and it is here that it is revealed that Selina and Jack Napier hang close to each other and basically Jack if not Selina tried to take as much money from the rich kids through gambling. I guess its something. The story seems a bit slow at the start.
But then one day after Bruce is lending a jacket to Harvey Dent to try on for some seconds, the lights go out and he is hit with a dart. Bruce is basically left there and Selina is in the computer surveillance  room basically deleting what just happened.

Much and much around this time you get to know the different Alfred. I am to say that he is called Alfred Pennyworth all the same and is Bruce's uncle in this dimension. Here around this time we learn of how Bruce's parents died and anyways, that Bruce was saved by other students who called the ambulance. Bruce beings to suspect something sinster is going on at the school and that especially something is up with those poker games. Anyways Harvey Dent is revealed to have been captured and his parents aren't rich to pay the ransom and the cops won't help either. Later after much talking between Bruce, Selina and Jack-Harvey Dent is released. Barbara Gordon calls Bruce to speak with him, she is nice and gives him a piece of her sandwich because he had to wait a long time to get called even.Anyways, she asserts that she wants the school to be safe and whatever. Now, I say that really this could have happened before Harvey Dent was released but I never give away the stories too much but generally these two events of  Harvey Dent being held for ransom and Bruce being called the prinicipal's office assert some type of highschool drama of danger. Anyways, Bruce blames himself through the whole entire time that they were supposed to capture him and well Harvey Dent's face gets a cut on side. So the captors basically defaced him and well he is not that happy about it as anyone would be. This harkens to what you can expect at the ending somewhat. Who would be capable of slashing another person's face?

Now basically Bruce goes to find the poison he was injected with and goes to a pharmacist called what? She is basically Poison Ivy, folks and well there is some sexual tension there as she grants Bruce a book of some sort. Anyways another party arises. This time it is a party Bruce has devised as a trap for those he assumes are the kidnappers. Those who are the gambler folks who make their way into rich kids' parties to take their money. At this time, Bruce suspects both Selina and Jack. Especially prior discovers that the poison from the dart could very much kill him. Confides in his uncle about the matter and permission to throw the party. Now, in this world, pretty much Alfred is not his bulter but sort of like his guardian and somewhat confidiant and mentor. Its quiet odd to see that Alfred is the one calling the shots but then again would he have not in the original story if Bruce was a kid after all or even a teen? Yep, pretty much spot on yet the dynamic is more paternal and Alfred is not his bulter but just a relative with governance over the fortune and estate. Hmm, the key difference in this world is that wealth seems to be displaced a bit different and much Bruce's parents were not killed in an alley this time but in their own home. Because yea, basically in this world people are so needy-instead of the alley way; they break into the homes and run seedy gambling operations. So Bruce comes to the party with Ivy and Jack dances with Selina. Much and much, this is quiet a summary. There was another party where Jack is ditched while Bruce and Selina have a date across town as they were childhood friends and have this "spark" to want to catch up. Its kinda of her we learn of Jack's home situation and that he has an altar for Selina in his room. Pictures and momentos really and much.  Yet I don't mention it as a main element of the story because I gotta keep this summary short as possible. I mean it contributes alot to Jack's would be Joker character. Anyways Bruce and Jack go off to nab the would be kidnappers. Really they play a video game in which seems to be a weaker version of  Batman fighting the Joker. Its a caped guy fighting a clown. The caped guy wins and Jack throws a fit. You wonder is this the point where the story snaps. Oh it does. Selina basically has been captured.

In this story there are about three parts. At this point we are in the 2nd and 3rd part. Literally and well, Bruce and Jack try to run after Selina but its too late and she has been kidnapped. And that is that. The police come and notice the liquor at the party and Alfred and his husband come and settle the matter. Alfred basically then says, " the police can be paid off". I mean this is kind of out of character for the Alfred Pennyworth character but it matches with his new character dynamic of not being a bulter in this world.  Yes, as well, he is also gay. Many people I have read don't like the change of Bruce to be an asian or Alfred to be gay but really I don't find anything wrong with either fact not much at all. Here, Alfred is more interesting than what he usually is-let's just say that in my opinion. He never sticks out much in the books besides some events and really only shines in cartoons and movies. I mean here, he is treated more like a secondary character than usual or given higher importance. Its an interesting dynamic that seems to make this world's Alfred very unique. Anyways, Bruce and Jack split up to cover leads. Jack ends up talking to his poor class robber friends and Bruce gets kidnapped by the people who attempted to kidnap him before. So basically Bruce saves Selina and they leave. Here we see a more different dyamic that Alfred is not the bulter but someone else is and basically they serve I think dumplings to Bruce and Selina. It seems to be their bonding moment and then they basically go into one room and have sex. Its really much implied by Selina's change of clothes afterwards.

Jack sees from the fucking window and is like, "get some B-dub". But then realizes Selina is not at home. It becomes an argument later on between Selina and Jack. Selina returns home and the situation at home gets worse and that her father has to be held down to not injure himself and does not recognize her. She basically throws a book for an art school in the trash as if in despair to realize that she cannot go because of how dire things are with her father. Anyways, she somehow goes to visit Jack at his home. No one is there and she sees the altar in his room and he asked if she likes it. She says yes and pretty much then has sex with him. So he got some. In the self narrative of Selena which does guide parts of the story, she reveals she has an interest in both Jack and Bruce and cannot pick one or the other. Later on of course, Bruce and Jack argue at a field trip. Of course, Barbara Gordon speaks to Bruce again to warn him to be safe on the school trip before that and well the school has been forced to change the trip into a visit to a science muesum for all that has happened. Kidnappings and what not and all sorts of things in between. I mean like literally one student got kidnapped and their face slashed. Another poisoned with something that would have killed them if they did not figure out the cure. Then another student got kidnapped. So the school is playing it safe but Bruce and Jack argue and nearly fight at the trip and if not fought before the principal called Bruce in. Selina does not know how to handle this and urges them to stop being childish.

Basically the story comes to a climax where and when Bruce goes to investigate who purchased the toxin by visting this world's Poison Ivy and it leads him to Jack and really much Bruce recovers the surveilance or something and learns of the true outlooks of the attackers. One of the attackers has a cat mask or a bear one that is pink. Anyways, Bruce and Jack come together to apologize and Jack says that Selena will come back when she feels likely to," like a cat". However, on Selina's instagram or social media and not instagram really but something like-she posts a post that says she is going to basically going to leave in an implied forever sense. Bruce rushes to the rood where someone in a cat mask is on the roof.  The person who basically is in charge of everything wrong that was happening and why Bruce almost got killed if not Harvey Dent's face slashed. I mean basically without them and their drama, life would be pretty normal much and much to a degree. This person turns around and takes off the mask and its Selina. Bruce begs her not to jump. Selina reveals her motives( that she needs to move her father to another facility) and that she was forced to act when  Bruce was not any easy target in the gambling effort to take all his money. That she needed to find an inventive way to take his money and yet enlisted the help of Jack and his friends but they messed it up and captured Harvey Dent instead. Really much she is basically so sure in behind her efforts. Jack comes up and begs her to not jump off. Bruce basically offers to give his money to save her father. She basically refuses it and says that if she can only have his heart in change for money that she does not want it. Jack  pleads for her to step down.  Bruce says that they have been both played. Selina explains further what she did and that she did fake her kidnapping and basically says that she does not need them both and that she basically did play them. Which is kind of the typical Catwoman trait but just a bit sinster and twisted. She basically jumps in the water below and well Bruce and Jack lose their minds thinking she is dead. And well basically Bruce becomes a recluse at school and refuses to speak to Barbie Gordon and Jack goes about his usually thieving ways. Selina is revealed to be alive and in her self narrative, the Poison Ivy of this world has always been her accomplice and that through her great connections now is in Paris and posts this to her social media and the story ends.

Why this is a good story in my opinion because it is one of those Catwoman stories where Catwoman is kind of bent if not morally compromised than the usual sum of gray ideals than which the usual Catwoman is. I mean here, in this whole story-this version of Selina Kyle has basically played both Bruce and Jack or in other words Batman and the Joker. But yet I say that in this story the characters match to their counterparts on trait. Bruce here is a detective, wants to do the right thing and tries to do the right thing. Jack basically could be said to be in the same characteristics of the person who would become the Joker. I mean that in early stories of the Joker or his origins or one of them is that he was the hero-Red Hood. Really much  the hero or attemptive hero until Batman caused him to fall into the pit of chemicals. Here Jack has the characteristics of being somewhat good and only doing bad things to survive and with somewhat good intentions or for the interest of love.As well when Selina Kyle is about to jump off the building, she dismisses the worth of his feelings and well that reminded me of how Joker treats Harley Quinn. Or as if he is to learn to be warped or abusive from what Selina Kyle does here.Selina again in this story has done the usual Catwoman playing people thing but yet to a somewhat less than gray context. The poison in the dart could have killed Bruce. She basically allowed for someone's face to get cut. While she does achieve the means to get her father better healthcare and housing yet help, she also has done much to just use people and then toss them like objects. I find this somewhat alarming as that she is only 16 in this story and basically getting people maimed and poisoning them with poisons that could kill them. The whole premise is that they are actually going to turn into Batman, Catwoman and the Joker in the future and if so, this version of Catwoman could be amongst the worst morally concerned. Other than that whole insight of things from a person who has read of many different Catwomen and times where the main continuity one has been not morally gray to appreciate this version of the character for something or another; basically the story is good because it makes sense and tells a story. The characters are recognizable as day to day personas of Batman, Catwomen or the Jokers or represent them in some way. I basically say that they are not just simple teens in this story but teens with defined characters.

Though this story does lack some things. The ending seems a bit rushed just a bit towards the very end.The dimensional scaling is freaking weird. Why is Commissoner Gordon, a woman but everyone who is usually white and male aren't women/girls and black? How can you have a Dick Grayson to be the same age as Bruce Wayne. That is just weird. Who is Barbie Gordon? I mean, is she Barbara Gordon  in the main continuity? Or not? Why is Poison Ivy  older than everyone else that usually are I am going to say probably in the main-older than her? These questions rattle me. It would be nice to see the part where Bruce cures himself. The setting is established somewhat but the rest of the city much is kinda of ignored. Who is the Commissioner in place of Gordon? And maybe that would have explained why the police are corrupt. Aside from that; the story is a good one. Not the best work of all time but its better than the recent Batman Beyond somewhat in the sense that they don't keep pitting down the main character called Terry with some type of memory loss or cheating or something like death. Nope, I mean the story does not trudge on-it moves on with some type of energy.

Much and much people are going to say alot about this work and I really say that it is just another run of the mill graphic novel but offers new perspectives on things and characters who usually don't get heavy story guiding force like Alfred. I mean usually he stuck in the Batcave or in the mansion and pretty much never used to move along stories that much aside from some minor times where he is granted some minimal temporary importance. Run of the mill is not a bad depiction where the graphic novels from DC are somewhat good and tell the DC folklore for a different audience than usual and still communicate the same archetypes and similar idealisms. I mean literally, people are kinda of uneducated thinking these graphic novels are supposed to be like comics seen else and must mean that comics are going down the drain if characters are changed to be asian or asian and gay. But really I am going to say that the graphic novels are meant to be a new take on things and why they even exist is to do that. Pretty much that is how things have been done at DC comics. They just created a brand of graphic novels for the teenagers and young adults. They aren't supposed to be like the comics by their very purpose. Yet people will say that the graphic novels are to be the comics for characters they honest to anything only see on teeshirts and never read any stories about them. Personally folks, I have not read a Superman title since 2016 maybe and just seeing these graphic novels gives you something more interesting or bright to look at than what Superman is doing. Noticably I really did not like what they did with Superman but that is another subject. The point is that people who say this work is trash don't have any real reference of reading DC comics at all or are real fans to know about their different brands and surely that the graphic novels for teens are not a replacement for the main continuity stories. Yet that is what people want to act like and spread such misinformation and get worked up over nothing. Nothing because this was actually a good story that even might get me who has read the comics of DC in the past to look up different alternative versions of Catwoman because the story intrigues a what if scenario of Catwoman not being morally gray like to a lighter gray but a darker gray. Which in effect shows that if the story is intriguing and gets you into a character that exists in their own work that the publisher is currently selling, then a story has not only be told and won but makes you seek out other works with the character in it. There is in fact I think a serialization of Catwoman going on maybe launched after that whole marry Batman drama for illustration. I actually read a Catwoman book in the book store so it seems to exist on the prior that this "Gotham High" is actually a good story.Because this one story in just from what I gather solely was about Catwoman and promoting her as a character in which people should read of in her actual serialization. Yet youtubers and their followers don't get this marketing strategy that only works when stories are actually good. Because maybe even if they have all the toys of comics and wonder in their rooms or sets of rooms-they probably never read comics but settle for the gimicks and toys.

Correction; The Principal was just called Principal Gordon. But I am to assume that Barbara would be the name.
