The overall purpose was to protect American liberties to speak out and of free speech. In a time period there were many laws made to prohibit decent or speech against the government itself-the organization aimed to bring back the ability to have free speech and to be able to speak back against the government. While Charles Schenck was convicted for his anti war papers, in Debs vs the United States and Eugene Debs convicted. Justice Oliver Wendel Holmes and his dissent led to freedom of speech being a right that could seldom be taken away; leading a feat characteristic that can be solely named American.
