Day 6: The Elder Roots

Image Reference: A massive tree with roots that spiral like a labyrinth, covered in glowing moss. A small, hooded figure kneels before a crevice in the roots, where faint golden light escapes. Fireflies hover around the entrance, forming a soft halo of illumination. The background consists of a dense forest, but the focus remains on the ancient tree’s immense presence.

Technical Process:

  1. Establishing Scale – I draw the tree’s roots extending far beyond the panel’s frame, emphasizing its enormity. The hooded figure is small, reinforcing the feeling of reverence.
  2. Lighting Strategy – The golden light from the root’s crevice serves as the primary source of illumination, casting long shadows and creating contrast between the glowing moss and the darker forest.
  3. Texture & Detail – The roots are rendered with deep grooves and age lines, giving them a sense of ancient wisdom. The moss is depicted with tiny, luminescent spots to simulate natural bioluminescence.
  4. Atmosphere & Mystery – The fireflies act as subtle guides, drawing the viewer’s attention to the opening, hinting at something hidden within.

Connection to My Life:
The Fayth were sealed inside statues, waiting for summoners to hear them. I remember kneeling in the Chamber of the Fayth, feeling their presence in the silence. This comic mirrors that experience—the reverence of standing before something ancient, something powerful, and not knowing if you’re worthy to step inside.

Day 7: Raincaller’s Hollow

Image Reference: A deep forest clearing where massive mushroom-like structures form a canopy. Rain trickles down in fine, misty sheets. A lone woman sits on a raised root, playing a stringed instrument. The rain does not touch her—there is an invisible barrier around her. Small creatures with glowing eyes watch from the shadows.

Technical Process:

  1. Layered Composition – The foreground consists of thick, wet foliage, framing the clearing and leading the viewer’s eyes toward the musician.
  2. Water Effects – Raindrops are drawn with white streaks and subtle splashes on surfaces, while mist is added using soft, translucent gradients.
  3. Sound in a Silent Medium – The strings of the instrument vibrate slightly, their movement indicated by fine motion lines, while the posture of the creatures suggests they are entranced.
  4. Contrast Between Wet & Dry – The invisible barrier is subtly indicated by the absence of rain droplets near the musician, emphasizing her mysterious nature.

Connection to My Life:
The first time I summoned Shiva, the world seemed to pause. The way she moved, the way she existed, was unlike anything else. This comic captures that—the feeling of control over the elements, the hush that falls when something powerful takes the stage.

Day 8: Tidekeepers

Image Reference: A shoreline where towering stone monoliths stand in shallow water, each with intricate carvings glowing faintly. The tide is pulling back, revealing a hidden stairway leading beneath the sand. A young girl watches from a distance, clutching a broken compass.

Technical Process:

  1. Vertical Composition – The monoliths create strong vertical elements, contrasted by the horizontal flow of the tide.
  2. Hidden Depth – The stairway is revealed only partially, drawing curiosity about what lies beneath.
  3. Symbolism – The broken compass represents lost direction, reinforcing the theme of uncertainty.
  4. Lighting & Reflection – The wet sand reflects the monoliths, creating a mirrored effect that enhances the surreal quality.

Connection to My Life:
The ruins of Zanarkand were always half-buried, waiting for someone to uncover them. This comic is about those forgotten places, the secrets left behind when the tide moves away.

Day 9: Firefly Vale

Image Reference: A meadow at twilight, where thousands of fireflies rise from the grass like floating lanterns. In the center, an old woman holds a glass jar, catching a single firefly. Behind her, a younger version of herself watches, translucent like a memory.

Technical Process:

  1. Dynamic Lighting – The fireflies serve as floating light sources, creating an interplay of warm yellows against cool blues.
  2. Ghostly Imagery – The younger self is depicted with faded lines and soft transparency to enhance the memory effect.
  3. Focus & Blur – Foreground fireflies are blurred to create depth, making the central figures more distinct.
  4. Silent Storytelling – The old woman’s expression is one of quiet nostalgia, conveying a lifetime of memories in a single moment.

Connection to My Life:
When I sent spirits to the Farplane, I always wondered if they looked back one last time. This comic explores that—how we hold onto memories, even as they drift away like fireflies.

Day 10: Echoes Beneath the Leaves

Image Reference: A winding forest path where sunlight barely filters through the canopy. The ground is covered in soft moss. A boy walks barefoot, his steps leaving behind glowing footprints that fade after a few seconds. The trees seem to lean inward, listening.

Technical Process:

  1. Muted Color Palette – Deep greens and earthy browns create a quiet, secluded mood, with the glowing footprints as the only bright contrast.
  2. Environmental Awareness – The trees are subtly curved toward the boy, implying that the forest is aware of his presence.
  3. Gradual Fade Effect – The footprints fade out progressively, reinforcing the theme of fleeting presence.
  4. Implied Sound – The absence of other footprints suggests the boy is walking in complete silence, making the forest’s reaction more eerie.

Connection to My Life:
The Cloister of Trials always felt like it was watching me, responding to my movements. This comic plays with that idea—the feeling that even in silence, you are never truly alone.
