VHR:Dark anime and their openings: Rokka no Yusha. Braves of the Six Flowers.
Rokka no Yusha.
Amongst the "six braves" there is a traitor, can they find the traitor when there are seven braves instead of the usual six to defeat the demon king. Mystery and wonder ensures.
Why its dark: The chosen six heroes denoted by the mark of a petal they have go off to qwell a demon king who only comes back again years later. Here, you have many people who have possibly gone off and died just to stop something which continues to return. Next, in the usual mystical world adventure, it usually ends with the main characters defeating the evil for good. But this returning of the heroes to continuous quell the demon king makes each effort to quell like a chore, continuous even and seeping an opportunity to get worse each time.
Furthermore, the bright characters you usually see in a mystical adventure show where they get a happy ending is kinda of portrayed as not a real happy ending at all, but the continuation of a conflict really not solved.
In this generation of braves, there is a man called Ardlet, who calls himself the "strongest man in the world". However throughout the anime he is constantly berated of being the seventh, the traitor and usually looked down on the rest of the braves as an impostor, trickster and weakling. However being the strongest-is really being the strongest in mind as being able to find who the true traitor is. We learn the backgrounds of Fremy, Adlet and Nashetania/Nachetanya and briefly some of the other characters.
Adlet and his sister were outcast when they did not go along with a leader demon who took over their village way of life/orders/rules and the sister was killed forcing Adlet to seek help in the form of a fierce old man who teaches him things like science, morals, willpower, frame of view and how to fight. Which is dark itself, as he is shown starving and weak when he seeks for help.
Fremy is revealed to be a half demon and half human created to serve the demon lord, sent to kill potential braves but after failing to kill Chamot Rosso she flees and is exiled. This not only makes her a potential suspect, but highlights the fact that even she has no reason to be the traitor at all. As that she would be killed if she ever returned to the demons. Her forth coming attitude and views point that it is actually someone else who is the traitor. Furthermore, it also highlights how much the other braves look down on Adlet, when he is still accused. Last but not least is the princess Nachetanya, who spends a great deal with Adlet before they reach the other Braves and fall into a trap, a barrier that traps them in when that was meant to protect against demons.
Nachetanya reveals to Adlet that she during a civil war was forced to sleep out on the outside while her mother and other relatives where killed excluding her father. This is not a fact presented to any of the six braves during their decision on who the brave killer/ traitor really is.
Spoiler: At the end of the story, it is revealed Nachetanya is the brave killer, was really faking her liking of Adlet, only looking forward him as a way to kill the rest of the six braves present! And its confirmed after the six braves try to kill her that she is using extreme demon magic as her body turns to mud.
How this affects the story is that the beginning of the story is portraying to be the casual mystical adventure story when its not about where the characters go and their bonds they build together, but rather how they perceive each other and how perception of others with very biased views can get you killed. Also at the end, it restarts as a normal of these type of adventure stories but with the possibility of another "traitor" as a seventh brave appears!
Its not what you would expect at all, this story turns the usually fantasy element and the usual happy adventure togetherness theme asunder and reveals the true enemies at times can be your perception and other perceptions, or a lack of knowledge and togetherness.

This one is a basic deconstruction of the first one provided in the link below.
Link two: first.
Cheery music! And roses and dandelions! Adventure is in the air, appears at first part of show and ending of show after the traitor is found. For dramatic effect, it reveals the parallels of this would be normal adventure tale( that is with elements of grand adventure and togetherness of the main characters), rather for what it truly is; as a rather dark world where humanity is on the brink of extinction to where someone has betrayed the order to defeat the demon king who wants to destroy humanity.
( This is only my thoughts on the opening and its context to the story, not a real review of the story at all).
