Book of Bantorra
The Book of Bantorra is an anime I watched earlier last month.
The anime was very proficient in killing off all a bunch of wide variety of characters
But this was for a reason, it seems or that was just a coincidence so many characters died.
The story revolves around the story of librarians called Armed Librarians who catalog the books( have appearance of stone tablets) that people turn into after they die. And anyone is able to read the books and this is a great way to tell some part of the story in each episode.
I mention, I liked this part because it shows things other characters necessarily do not know. Many episodes are indeed characters reading deceased characters' books.
I also like this show because the current leader of the librarians is a badass and is a women who shows open cleavage, has a swaggering like manner and uses a sling shot to kill her enemies.
There is a lot of death in the show, many people get killed but the show seems to reassure they are better off dead than suffering in the world. In one of the first scenes, one guy who is an armed librarian dies because he tries to save someone that the enemies of the series called the Church have put a bomb inside. The bomb explodes and he dies. No one seems to care, we don't even know his name but he does show up in the end.
The Church is the opposing side of the Librarians, and they have a lot of figures surrounded in mystery from their leader to this seemingly immortal guy who is fictionalized in a fairy tail and collects the books of Church members when they die.
To cut to the chase, this story spares no one of good faith. Volken Mackani and Noloty are two characters that are a good example of this. Volken Mackani is given a book that reveals that Hamutz, the current director exploded the ship full of people with bombs inside of them! He returns later and stronger and confronts the Director but she reveals a secret that takes away his fighting spirit and he dies tragically. Leaving Mirepoc, who is shown to love him saddened. Noloty is killed by the same secret between the Librarians and the Church. There appears to actually be a Librarian previously not mentioned who kills Volken Mackani's mentor on the island they meet before Volken's show down with Hamutz. Later, he appears to kill Noloty when she shows her good nature and tries to help a boy who works for the Church. He is not shown again but you can conclude that he died by the end result of the show.
The show concludes with the origins of the Library of Bantorra and the Church, where a powerful mage who can absorb books and the abilities of the people that were has to save the world by defeating beasts of the gods. His love interest is killed by a religion like sect that viewed over him and his progress. A god turned her into another beast and he supposedly defeated her, but she could not rest eternally because she had lost sight of who see was. In rage, or in an act of love, the mage kills the people who looked up to him as a savior to devour their books to become stronger to bring his love back to herself. He organizes the Librarians to keep this going and he is seen as a tree whom which many head figures in the Library feed to books of individuals they are actually supposed to store and protect ( in the public's eyes). The Church is organized to keep the system going and be an opposition to the librarians. And what is surprising is that a top ranking Librarian becomes the Church's leader.
The feels I got from this story was that this is a dark like reality and is more life like in outcomes. People are not prevented from dying in this show. People are placed with bombs inside of them by the church and set to explode when they lose it emotionally but of course, it is revealed that these people have given up on life and the bombs can actually be removed. The sudden deaths in the stories are kinda of unexpected. The story ends with all the dead characters fighting against the mage's lover to not finally pass on. Hamutz herself is killed in the darkest manner, impaled though her body by a plant only for Matalast to look on at her dead body. Matalast by the way is revealed to have a romantic relationship with Hamutz in the past which had to be one of the lighter parts of the series.
In the end, in conclusion-all the characters who have died are led by Hamutz to aide the magician to save his love from damnation. After this is done, Hamutz finally moves on and the rest of the dead cast recall that they will be moving on as well soon.
Mirepoc and Matalast along with some of the characters not given much detail into their past have victory over the beasts that were kept in the Library. The world finds out the secret link between the Librarians and the Church and the Librarians are disbanded and the Library torn down and revealed to be replaced by a bureau type function. This bureau is lead by Mirepoc and Matalast is on the run to make up for his wrong doings.
This story has been on my mind for a while now. There is a style of redemption here and even though it had some real dark elements the end was bright, I guess.
Well that's my review for the show.
