Independence Day Part One.
Today is February 28, 2015 and I call it the day of independence. And not just for me, no, no.
This is the day of independence from everyone who is a story teller and struggles to produce one story when they have the potential for many. They keep on reaching for a break, but because of the certain unforgiving conditions of the world, the ideas they have keep on stacking up and up. Until they have what I call story debt. So many ideas are stored up, uncompleted and are just waiting forever to be completed but they never are. Causing the author many grievances, pressures and pains, its a bloody cycle that convinces some people to get out of the industry all together. Or shall I say practice, because industry refers only really to two individualized groups who make up comics period.
Manga is not included, because manga exceeds comic standard and has different origins as well.
Marvel and DC comics are the only real players in the comic book company because that's only who the consumers will recognize. I am telling the truth, the only people who pay attention to Dark Horse and another comic imprint outside online origin basis, are those who actually favor reading comics.
People in the eyes of the normal citizen of the western society structure, who read lots of comic books are called "nerds". The occasional bystander attracted to comics by a TV show or today, a movie is just an occasional bystander. "Nerds" or rather in the proper term, those with further interest and depth into comics are the only ones who actually value comics for their story and do not value them for political messages they send in how their characters look and act.
Those who are in the comic business are simply there to not tell a story but to make money. That's why there characters go no where, the story never ends for many. I mean, there is always a cancellation in which they can get knocked off but that never happens for many stories. Today, the common tactic is to introduce diversity to get the common modern citizen of western society structure to buy into the comics. But what does this diversity really matter for the story and really do these makers of these comics actually even care about the diversities they represent? The truth is, you will find, is that they could care and they could not care. The point is, using such a method of diversification to appeal to society shows no one really gives a damn about the story.
Change the main character of a comic into a man when it was a woman and change racial features are such examples. But its really sad, because its like you are the main character of your life but then someone else comes along and steals your role/your life.
Somehow, all this is ignored. They say reboot every week or so. Big event, ever few months.
But really what is their true intention. They branch out into tv. They branch out into online.
Any person who is independently creating comics needs to know that these two companies are working together to stay in business forever. After all their ideas for comics are so similar. They come out with movies and shows, all for one goal. Block the chance of any other company from rising up. They already have trouble from web comics, Dark Horse and Oni Press, they want to prevent anyone in the modern era from getting recognition in the public and thus replacing them as truly the main character in the comic business. This relates to what I said when they "diversify" a story which replaces or changes the main character instead of giving this new character their own space. Its their own fear they put into their comics.
All these new shows launched by both Marvel and DC seek to get the modern citizen's attention and thus get more participants in the market. They are also doing this with movies. But it takes far longer to create a cohesive comic book movie than it does a show or a network with a bunch of shows.
Opps, spilled the secret. They intend to create an entire network for their selves? They might as well.
Marvel has Agents of Shield, Dare Devil and that side character from Captain America. Marvel is truly interesting because they were bought by Disney and their shows now appear on a Disney owned Network, ABC. Nightline, an ABC program even did a report on Marvel creating movies. Disney backs Marvel and its plan of getting the majority of uninformed novice citizens into their consumer cycle. Who backs DC? Warner Brothers does as many of their shows are produced by them. Shows I watched when I was young, like Teen Titans and Justice League where produced by Warner Brothers Animation. Where do DC comics' shows feature? On channel 39 or the CW owned by Warner Brothers. Are Disney and Warner Brothers the same company, I will say no but however, they have both the interest in staying alive. And the way to stay alive is getting money and getting money today is more opportune in comics or comic themed material. It doesn't matter if the shows are a cheap knock off the real material( I commend however, DC in its recent shows staying true to its comic source material), they just have to branch off a superhero or contain some elements of comic books.
They just have to be like any crime drama but with super powers possibly added in.
I'll tell you, Smallville was a shit show. It downgraded Superman into a normal t-shirt and jeans type of guy, and contained what I would call, a wash down version of the comics to appease the non-imaginative viewer.
Saying all this I will say that, there is a clear difference between these two companies and independents, the two companies do it for money while independents are more into it to make their ideals of a story into a reality. Some independents do it for money but those type don't last long. What is true for both parties is that they want to continue doing what they have, that is making comics by making money. However one party values money far more than their comics and wants to completely eradicate the other. That is the corporate side, Marvel and DC. People who are independents need to realize that they are like parents who want to murder you because of your possible potential to overtake/ surpass them. If you don't realize this and play into their hands, you and those like you have no chance of survival.
